Enrich Your Vocabulary
In learning languages, one of the most important and quite tiring to do is enriching vocabulary. There are some quizzes or games to enrich your vocabulary, especially with children or in small class. Here are some of them that quite i like and quite simple to do.
Hangman
Hangman is like the pinnacle of simple word game, just put your word and hang your stick figure until you are bored
Whirl Words
Just make them list as many words as possible with just changing one or two letters at a time. Work best for 3 or 4 letter words more. Can start from something like cup or rice.
Chain of word
Good in both small or slightly bigger class, just make the chain as longer as possible with mentioning words with the same first letter with the previous word.
Mention-a-much
Good if you want to study about a theme. Just give like 1 time, or 30 seconds for bigger students, make them mention as much words related to the theme as possible
Scrabble
If you have the game set, it’ll do best, if not, just make a simple set with paper or cardboards for sturdier set
Spelling Bee
Sometimes they know how to pronounce words but not how to spell them
Dictionary Race
Because of the advance of electronic dictionaries nowadays student are not motivated to touch dictionary anymore. In my experience, it is a good habit to open dictionary once on a while, especially for stumbling upon new words. You can have students bring their own dictionary and have them searching for 11-letter word start with r, animals in k, word in s with 3 or more meanings, etc.
Taboo
How to explain words without mentioning the taboo words.
Charade
Good both for humour and vocabulary, having you making the list or student to challenge in team , both are fun.
(update) Magic Box
Basically you make a blank crossword puzzle with the same number of characters all over. It is good for creative stimulation and vocabulary lesson.
There are some other fun ways to study vocabulary in language class. How about your ideas?
