Grand Challenge for Earth, and What Science Can Contribute for Its Development

Earth society is now advancing in a very fast pace. Along the way, Earth society faces a few challenges. The progress in knowledge and technical aspect make the world almost boundary-less, but in the other hand, people are more and more competing with each other.

This competition makes it shown that there is the gap or difference between “the have” and “the unfortunate”, “educated” and “uneducated”. This can be seen by analysing Millennium Development Goals. There is still people who eat once a day. There are children who can’t study and must go to work. There are women who can’t get the same privilege as men. There are still many children died because of malnutrition and unsafe carriage. There are still disease like HIV, ebola, and malaria. There are people who live in the remote area and don’t have access to energy and technology. In the other side of the spectrum, there are people who live in luxury and wasting their money.

In my opinion, other than environmental problem like global warming that sure is must be prevented together, the biggest challenge to earth society is to make these gap between people lessening, making the result sustainable, and make sure that everybody in this planet can life contently.

Science, knowledge, and capacity building are giving contribution to make the world as a better one. Science and knowledge can be used to make invention and innovation, make technology to build things that are cheaper and studier and easier, resulting in improvement in human life. By science, people can shorten distance between people (transportation, telecommunication) and shortening time to do daily activities. This gives people more time to think about things other than fulfilling the basic needs of life (that usually spend most of people’s time), resulting more time to use in developing science, protecting nature, and making relation with other people. Science and knowledge also can be used to improve our quality of life. Pandemic disease has been one of human’s hovering problems. With invention of vaccine and other medicine, that will not be any problem now. The same is happening with our food. Malnutrition and avitaminosis now is a rare-find. With all the innovation, the age expectancy of human life and the earth hopefully will be longer.

In the other hand, the development of science and technology, the easier and easier the life of the people become, capacity building become important to make people staying true to its nature as social creature and ruler of the earth. Other than the conveniences, there are also problem with environment, economics, and social transformations. So that people, especially in the developing countries, able to handle these problems, make sure that science and technology advancement can be used to its fullest potential without the bad sides, and also can be sustainable, capacity building is also important. Capacity building, as human resource, organizational, and institutional and legal framework development, make sure that everybody gets their understanding and access to the knowledge, manage relationship and organization, and maximize capacities, resulting in efficient and effective relationship in the developing process of the world.

About Ky

Currently Indonesian university student trying to submit more useful contents to share one's limited knowledge. Rather has wide, shallow interests, the writings will be as sporadic as it can be. Should write more scientific and field related topics, but writing muse says otherwise. Expect more on technical related writings especially softwares and apps, cultures, music, and random things.
